From Lens to Head End: Illustra IP Cameras, Wide Angle Clarity
From Lens to Head End is a series of posts on the IP Video systems available from American Dynamics. Over the next few weeks we’ll be sharing information about the Illustra IP Cameras, the VideoEdge NVR and the Victor unified client.
The Illustra camera line is American Dynamics latest IP camera offering. The Illustra line is a robust line featuring cameras in standard resolution all the way to to 1080p.
The Illustra cameras feature Theia lens technology which means crisp, clear wide-angle lenses from corner to corner. The “barrel-effect” typically seen when using other wide-angle lenses is eliminated.Even distribution of pixels across a scene is important where analytics are concerned. The Theia lenses allow for improved analytics by providing smooth pixel distribution. Every pixel in the scene is the same size reducing false-alamrs and leading to more effective analytic alerts.
The wide angle lenses combined with the HD resolution of the Illustra 600s means you can cover large outdoor spaces with fewer cameras, saving installation costs and time.
Illustra cameras offer wide angle clarity not found in competing cameras. Contact us today to learn how Illustra cameras can be part of your next surveillance application.

Illustra cameras are designed to withstand even the toughest environmental conditions. They deliver superior video in extreme rain and the cold while powered over your PoE network.
They are IP67 rated, which means they resist water penetration than much of the competition. A rating of IP66 is the industry standard.
The cameras can operate at -40 Fahrenheit. They also feature a PoE+ option for lower installation costs that will operate at -22 Fahrenheit.
Finally a heated lens ring helps eliminate condensation directly on the bubble. The heater ring can be powered by 24VAC or PoE+ power supplies.

The Illustra 200 and 600 cameras feature built-in facial detection that focuses the video quality on what matters most. The cameras can detect up to 5 faces in a scene and enhance the resolution around those faces while leaving the rest of the scene at a lower resolution. This provides high-quality facial images at up to 50% less storage costs.
Facial recognition is an ideal feature for ATM queues, bank teller or retail counters.

One thing that sets these cameras apart from the competition is their ease of installation.
Integrated Mounts:
The Illustra 200 and 600 cameras feature integrated mounts at no additional costs. This also means there are no additional part numbers to track down when designing a new surveillance project. The cameras can be mounted to a hard surface or electrical box or recessed mounted right out of the box. The camera body also has built-in threaded conduit holes which gives installers the best and quickest way to position the camera, saving time and money.
Remote Auto Focus
Many of the Illustra cameras also feature remote one-touch auto focus. The 3-9mm lenses are motorized and can be zoomed and focused remotely, further saving installation and service time. The Illustra 200 is the only standard definition camera with an auto focus lens and motorized zoom.
Illustra Connect
Illustra Connect is a software tool that ships with every Illustra camera that aid installers in several ways. The software can assist with IP addressing a large number of cameras by auto-configuring sequential static IP addresses, again reducing installation time. The software also provides live snapshots from connected cameras to assist with camera naming and positioning. Illustra connect is also capable of batch firmware updates.
These great features mean the Illustra cameras are among the easiest to install and maintain. Contact us today to learn how Illustra cameras can be part of your next surveillance application.
From Lens to Head End: Illustra IP Cameras, Resolution Refined
From Lens to Head End is a series of posts on the IP Video systems available from American Dynamics. Over the next few weeks we’ll be sharing information about the Illustra IP Cameras, the VideoEdge NVR and the Victor unified client.
The Illustra camera line is American Dynamics latest IP camera offering. The Illustra 600 series line is a robust line featuring cameras in both 720p and 1080p resolution.
HD Resolution
American Dynamics chose the HD standard for their Illustra which makes the cameras capable of identifying more details and covering more area. HD technology is an equivalent to Megapixel technology: 720p resolution is approximately 1MP while 1080p resolution is equivalent to 2 MP. The megapixel technology means greater detail will be captured in every scene, and the wider 16:3 aspect ratio will allow more area to be covered by a single camera.
Low Light Performance
The Illustra line also offers extreme low-light performance. The camera’s True Day Night feature switches to black-and-white in low light allowing surveillance to continue even down to .02 lux. Illustra cameras outperform the top 1.3MP and 2MP cameras on the market today by avoiding the blurred video produced my many IP cameras in low light.
With crisp HD resolution and powerful low light performance the Illustra cameras offer superior video quality. Contact us today to learn how Illustra cameras can be a part of your next surveillance application.

Victor 4.2 and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute: A Case Study
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, a world leader in cancer treatment and research, has been an American Dynamics customer for nine years. When it came time to build their new research wing, The Yawkey Center, they evaluated all of the competing technologies and in the end decided to continue their investment in American Dynamics by choosing Videodge and the victor client. “We continually evaluate our options,” said Ralph Nerette, Dana-Farber’s Security Manager, “but we continue to find, time and time again, that we’ve made the right decision to use American Dynamics’ products.”
One reason they chose the victor client is its ability to protect their investment in analog. Over the past nine years the institute had built up a large system of Intellex DVRs. Instead of abandoning that equipment as they made the move forward to an IP video system using the VideoEdge NVR, the victor client allowed the security team to continue using its analog equipment along side the new NVR and IP cameras. The seamless integration between legacy and IP video equipment allowed the security team to do its job without having to worry about which device was on the other end.
The victor client also allowed the institute to monitor and react to events from it’s existing Software House and Elpas systems using a unified platform. “We needed a solution that was really ready for the grand opening of our new wing,” Nerette said. “We needed something better than a proof-of-concept. We needed a solution that would work for us.” Event management is a key part of Dana-Farber’s daily security operations, victor provided them with a powerful solution for assessing and managing those events easily and quickly.
Dana-Farber is a testament to the power of victor and VideoEdge. Contact us today to learn how you too can take advantage of the most powerful NVR and client software in the industry.
